How Do I Know If Prayers Work?

December 8, 2022

Here’s how you know if your prayers are working. By having the faith that they are.

How do we know? Because God himself told us so in his word the bible. Jeremiah 29:12 says, “When you call me and come and pray to me, I will listen to you.”

But here’s the thing about prayer.

  1. Prayer Requires Persistence. Our children ask for things all the time. How do we know they’re serious, even in their own convictions about wanting that object of their desires? They ask. And ask. And ask again. And time goes by, and guess what, they still ask! Persistence in our prayers shows the same conviction. As  Romans 12:12 tell us we need “to be patient in tribulation and constant in prayer”.

  1. Prayers to God Aren’t Aladdin’s Magic Lamp. Like many things in life, the media (or in this case, movies) can severely distort our view of what’s real. While God has promised to answer our prayers, the answers we’re given may not manifest how we expected or even be what we thought we needed. Are you seriously afflicted by illness? Rather than being healed, God may grant us the strength to endure the pain and inspire others in the process. Are you financially insecure? Rather than being granted riches, God may give us the wisdom and humility to appreciate the less material things of life. Looking for business success? Rather than send us virality, God may put us in place to meet with others who can supplement our skills with ones we don’t currently possess and thereby help us to learn and grow.

Were our prayers answered? Absolutely! Just not in the way we expected.

  1. Answers Come In God’s Time, Not Ours. Faith allows us to trust that we’ll receive the answers to our prayers at the right time. What is the right time? Who better to determine that than our all-knowing father, rather than us earthly, short-sighted beings?

Like everything to do with our spirituality, prayer - and the conviction that they will be heard and answered - are grounded in faith.

So, the next time you stop momentarily to question whether your prayers are being answered, have “assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen”. (Hebrews 11:1). Indeed, have faith!
